Julia Shaternik at Art Expo NY 2024

What initially sparked your interest in painting, and can you describe the journey of how you began your career as an artist?

I've been drawn to painting since early childhood. Growing up surrounded by art, especially with my father's influence as a sculptor and artist, ignited my passion for creativity. After receiving my M.F.A. from Belarusian State University of Culture and Arts, I immigrated to the US in 2004, where I began exhibiting my work. My journey as an artist has been one of continuous exploration and growth, fueled by a deep love for artistic expression.

Throughout your artistic journey, what have been some of the defining moments or experiences that have shaped your approach to painting?

One defining moment was my first exhibition at the Museum of Russian Contemporary Art in Jersey City, NJ in 2006. It was a pivotal moment that validated my decision to pursue art professionally. Another significant experience was exhibiting at the Art Expo NYC in 2006. These experiences have shaped my approach to painting by instilling confidence in my artistic voice and encouraging me to explore new techniques and styles.

As an artist, what are some of the challenges you have encountered along the way, and how have you overcome them?

One challenge has been balancing the creative process with the business side of art. Marketing and promoting my work while staying true to my artistic vision can be challenging. Overcoming these challenges has involved seeking guidance from mentors, networking with other artists, and continually learning and adapting to the ever-changing art market.

What fuels your passion for painting, and what overarching goals or aspirations do you hope to achieve in your artistic career?

My passion for painting is fueled by a deep desire to express emotions, ideas, and experiences through art. Each brushstroke is an opportunity to communicate and connect with others on a profound level. Beyond personal expression, I aim to evoke positive emotions, infuse happiness, and provide moments of relaxation for viewers, especially amidst the challenges of our modern world.

My ultimate aspiration is to ascend to prominence as a renowned artist, sharing my creations with a global audience and leaving an indelible mark on the art world.

Especially noteworthy is my unique connection to the artistic heritage of the Brandywine Valley, where I reside near the Brandywine Museum. Living just across the street from where the illustrious American artist Andrew Wyeth once resided, I've discovered a profound connection to this area's artistic legacy. The serendipitous connection of my son Nicholas sharing a name with Andrew Wyeth's son, Nicholas Wyeth, adds a touch of magic to this connection.

As I contemplate the landscapes that once inspired Andrew Wyeth, I am filled with purpose and boundless potential. Perhaps, like him, I can leave an enduring legacy in the world of art. As I embark on this journey, I hold steadfast to the belief that true success is not solely defined by artistic achievements, but also by the values we uphold along the way.
